Windows 10 Update to Version 20H2 (OS Build 19042.867)
Sun Mar 28, 2021 5:09 pm
Just an FYI,
Upon updating to Version 20H2 (OS Build 19042.867), stickies disappeared from my taskbar and system tray. The only way I could restore them was by re-installing stickies. That immediately restored them as the were. Microsoft prefers that you use their version of sticky notes, anti-trust judgements not withstanding.

I found something similar on one of my machines - when I updated, the icons in the Startup folder were deleted. That's how Stickies starts, and if you reinstall the app, it will put that icon back, and so fix the problem.
If anyone else encounters this, you only need to create a new shortcut. Run (windows-r) this:
That will open the right place in Explorer - put a shortcut to Stickies in there.

Thanks for that info Tom.
When I ran shell:startup it took me to C:\Users\*****\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup, however stickies install added the shortcut to C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp. I believe this is because I installed stickies for "all users". This indicates that you can put the shortcut in either location, depending on your preferences. I wouldn't put in both locations though. I suspect that you would wind up with either two instances running or a locked PC.
Thanks again.

Actually you'll be OK if you have the icon in both places. Yes, the two folders work as you suspect - icons in one are run when just you log in, and those in the other are run when any user logs in. For most home PCs this is the same thing, but corporate machines will likely draw a more important distinction.
Stickies has a built in function to prevent it from being started twice. If you run the app again, it will just bring the existing instance to the front.
Incidentally, if you know what you're doing you can override that safeguard, but I suspect there are very few people who would need to use the override.

Makes absolute sense.
