How to transfer to a new computer with a simultaneous version upgrade Empty How to transfer to a new computer with a simultaneous version upgrade

Tue Jan 11, 2022 11:01 pm
I currently use Stickies v8 on a Win7 machine, and am moving to a new Win10 machine. On my current machine, I store all Stickies data on a separate (D) drive instead of the default program file location. I'd like to keep this setup on the new machine since it is much easier for me to do continuous data backups of a separate drive.

I installed Stickies v10 on the new machine. I then copied the entire Stickies data folder to the new machine's D drive. The install page says that v10 will look for prior database information and migrate it to the new format. It didn't do that; I assume it is because when the program first starts it is looking for the data in the default location. I changed the data location to the new path, but it still won't access the data.

What is the proper way to do this migration? Do I need to make the registry changes?

Thanks for any guidance. Great program, I can't live without it.

For converting v8 to v10 on win10 or win11 you need to upgrade microsoft visual studio libraries , by default they are not installed anymore unless some other program has done it .

The error reported is :  KB00093 - Ordinal 12404 could not be located

You can find the install program from microsoft here:
https://www.zhornsoftware.co.uk/support/kb.pl?q=00093

Some more info is here ( but same install program ):
https://www.zhornsoftware.co.uk/support/kb.pl?q=00085

The easiest way to upgrade to your D drive is to point the installer to that directory when installing v10 ( there is a browse button ).
It will install also the stickies.exe there and create a startup shortcut to this location .

If you do not want to have the exe there you can manually convert v8 files to stickies.db using the mdb2db.exe in your v10 datadirectory that you have already and copy the stickies.db created in the v8 directory to overwrite the one in the v10 data directory.

If you have already created stickies in v10 that you need .... well you have to save them before overwriting the stickies.db .

After it seems v10 works well you can move the data using a registry change ( i have never done that ..... ) .

KB00095 - Moving the data file location
https://www.zhornsoftware.co.uk/support/kb.pl?q=00095

Instead of moving the datafile you could change the path for stickies autobackup to the D drive ?

The " proper way " i guess is having v8 running smoothly in default location and then executing the install .

Hope it gives you some inspiration how to proceed ?

Thanks, this was very helpful. I tried a few things.

First, I had simply installed v10 on the Win 10 (64 bit) machine. It actually worked fine, with no errors, although as mentioned it could not find the existing data which I had on the D drive, even after I 'told' the program where the data was.

I then uninstalled it, and copied the existing data to the default app directory. This time, upon reinstall, it found the files and converted them to the v10 format, but then gave me the "side by side configuration" error. Not sure why the error only came up with this approach.

I then uninstalled again, and tried to install the program on the D drive. That resulted in the same error, even when I tried changing the registry path to D.

I'm fine having the program on the D drive or on the C drive, it's really the data I need on D.

I'm going to install the visual studio library and see if that fixes it.

How did you get on?

This KB article might be of use: https://www.zhornsoftware.co.uk/support/kb.pl?q=00095

However, another way would be to have the data file stored in the default location and set up backups to your d: drive.  Either will work, though.
