Opacity (Background vs. Text)

Would it be possible to separate the opacity setting (different value for background and text)? I would like to set the background to black with something like 50% opacity, but keep the text white with 100% opacity. Right now, setting opacity yo 50% also changes the white text to gray because it's opacity also goes to 50%.
