language.dll will not load
Tue Apr 21, 2020 7:53 am
In windows 10 version 1909 the language.dll will not load ("error 14001 loading language.dll"). Windows 10 Version 1803 works fine. Is there a solution?

Personnally, I'm under W10 1909, and have no problem with french language dll.
Which language are you talking about ?
Did you try to re-download the DLL ? (in case the one you already have has been corrupted for any reason during W10 update)

Bonjour / Hello
désolé de ne pas pouvoir vous aider.
sorry to not being able to help you.
Je confirme que chez moi ça marche.
I confirm that everything's fine with me.
Ma configuration / my config
- Stickies 10.0d
- WIN10 Pro 1909 64bits "up-to-date"
Pour être sur, j'ai re-téléchargé le fichier langue depuis le site : il est bien identique à celui que j'avais.
To be sure, I just re-downloaded language dll file from website : it is exactly identical to the one I had previously.
J'ai aussi re-téléchargé le programme installeur stickies_setup_10_0d.exe et il est également identique à celui que j'avais utilisé.
I have also re-downloaded install program stickies_setup_10_0d.exe that is also exactly identical to the one I used.
Le problème ne vient donc pas d'un fichier corrompu sur le site
Problem do not come from a corrupt file on the website
Je ne suis malheureusement pas capable d'en dire plus...
Unfortunately, I'm not able to say more...

Merci Laurent.

We can now only hope that Tom has a look on this post.
As developper, he knows surely what exactly is error 14001, and I guess he'll understand this strange behaviour : OK on some computers, KO on others....

I wonder if win10 Event Viewer can give some more detail about the encountered error . I installed the fr language dll and had no problems ( win10 pro 1909 ).
LaurentG you are the translator for the french version ?

Yes, I am, but I didn't generate the DLL myself. I just sent to Tom a file, generated thanks to a specific tool provided by Tom to help translation, and from this file, Tom generated the DLL.
Moreover, according to Hervé B's remarks, issue is not specific to french dll, but is the same with all dll
Nevertheless if I ca help, don't hesitate to ask....

( and i read about the same problem using the german translation file ... )
Best regards ,

The error code comes from Windows, and is a result of calling LoadLibrary.
This is the page which defines it: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/win32/debug/system-error-codes--12000-15999-
Half way through a detailed explanation to you about how I don't understand SXS quite well enough to solve the problem, I had an idea about how I might be able to sort it out. It looks ok here - but perhaps you help test it?
I've recompiled the DLL, without any references to code, so the SXS error you're running into ought to be bypassed. This is the link:
https://www.zhornsoftware.co.uk/stickies/xl/fr02.zip
If you try that one, do you still get the error message, and does the translation still work correctly please?
Tom

This is good news. You prompted me to go back and look again at the way I've been compiling language DLLs for many years. The way they've been for all that time means they include a tiny bit of code (which is never run) as well as the translation. The above file has that code removed, and so it means when Windows tries to use the file it performs fewer checks. Those checks weren't needed, so this is altogether better.
I'll look to replace all the translations using this new method, which is one more step to completely eliminating SXS error messages in Stickies
Tom
