Caffeine & Windows 11 System Tray Tooltip Missing
Fri Feb 04, 2022 5:25 pm
Having just recently upgraded to Windows 11, I no longer can see the "xxx minutes remaining" tooltip when I hover my cursor over the Caffeine icon in the system tray.

I can't explain it. The docs haven't changed:
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32/api/shellapi/nf-shellapi-shell_notifyiconw
(there's no mention of W11 on that page)
and I can see someone else suffering from the same problem:
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/588939/windows-11-vm-popupopen-message-is-not-generated-w.html
Neither of which help you I appreciate. Under W10, two messages are sent to Caffeine when the tooltip would otherwise be shown, which allows me to show (and hide) the extended tooltip. Under W11, they're no longer sent.
I'd like to call "bug" because W11 is quite new, but it's a risky business to call out MS. Perhaps this is one of those things which will "go right by itself"?

As a software engineer, I have this saying, "Problems that go away by themselves, come back by themselves."

Same here, I'm using Win11.
Doesn't matter if I start caffeine via CMD with commandline parameters or if I use a shortcut with comandline parameters.
They seem to work (at least the dialogue parameter works, and some others where you can see immediately response).
But doesn't matter which parameter I use, I don't see it in the tooltip.

SoCalDude - I agree, my response isn't great. Maybe the problem will disappear, maybe not.
However, from my point of view, I wrote the code which worked OK, and then when W11 came out, something has changed so that it no longer works correctly. There have been many times I've written code which I've not got to work very well, and so I've not released it, or stuck with it until it does work well enough. When Windows changes "underneath" me that's another matter though.
If a developer works for a large software house, perhaps they get access to MS support to be able to ask them about these sort of issues. Sadly that's not a resource I have access to. Once I've read the docs, and Googled it, and then tried increasingly "creative" ways to get around the problem, I'm out of luck.

I know this isn't a terribly helpful reply, but I'm on W11 now and I'm experiencing the same issue.
