Default hotkey (Win+S) on Windows 10
Tue Sep 14, 2021 7:29 pm
I just installed Stickies, and unfortunately the default "New sticky note" hotkey (Win+S) doesn't work on Windows 10, because Windows Search seems to grab it. These days, there are so many Windows hotkeys, that it's almost entirely guesswork what will work and what won't.
Does anyone have a good set of hotkeys that don't clash with Windows 10 defaults? And would it be worth updating the defaults used by Stickies to something that isn't already owned by Windows (yes, I know this is an annoying moving target, but as things stand the "new user experience" with Stickies is really quite annoying...)

Hi Paul,
another option (the one I chose) is to deactivate the Win+S hotkey in Windows.
Open the windows search with this hotkey do not seem to me very important nor useful, and if you deactivate it in Windows, it becomes immediately active for new stickies creation.
I did it following instructions found here : https://www.ghacks.net/2015/03/22/how-to-disable-specific-global-hotkeys-in-windows/
To be specific, it consists in creating a new registry value, named DisabledHotkeys in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced, and assign it letters that we do not want any more to be associated with Win key as windows hotkey.
In my case, DisabledHotkeys= SV to invalidate both Win+S and Win+V in Windows, and "free" them for Stickies (S) and Ditto (V)

That detail is also written up here: https://www.zhornsoftware.co.uk/support/kb.pl?q=00090 for those who look for it around my site.
You might be right about altering the default key press, though. I'm not sure what it should be instead - what do you use (I reclaim the key from Windows using the above method - muscle memory means I've been pressing that combination for very many years now).
