Zoom In/Out with scroll wheel for images

I use screenshots a lot, but rather than close, I'd rather be able to zoom in and out quickly.

You can control-wheel an image to enlarge or reduce it ... but you're not zooming, but actually resizing it.
Try it out - zoom in, then out, then in, then out and finally put it back to how you started. It will look terrible. When you zoom out, you throw away pixels.
However ... and this is a bit of a workaround, if you keep control held down, you can zoom in and out, and the sizing remains based on the original image. It's once you release control that it's saved.
So, you could control-wheel to zoom in, then back again. Or alternatively just zoom in, then press control-z to put it back as it was?
